MultiCultural Fair/Curriculum Night
Come to the third annual East Elementary Multi-Cultural Fair.  In Conjunction with Curriculum Night!  Thursday, January 27th 6-7:00pm in the gym and  cafeteria.
Also, come visit your students classroom.

Math- Dividing and multiplying decimals.  Please practice the multiplication facts with your students.  Our next chapter is fractions-I am extremely excited for fractions because there are so many fun things to do with them…please do not tell your student you hate them. J

Science- Continue our unit on Heredity.  We should be finished with heredity by the end of the  week and will soon be learning about magnetism. 

WRITING- We will continue to practice the steps of the writing process.  If you student would like to

Language and Reading- We have been doing a lot of reading comprehension and will continue to do so.  Last week was D.I.B.E.L.S testing and I was very impressed how well all of the students did.  I hope to continue the ongoing improvement.  Thank you for reading with your students.  A recent study, showed that students who read 15 minutes a night with a parent was the equivalent of how much a student would attain from reading in a full day of school. Weekly News

Math- We have been learning how to use protractors and measuring.  We have also been reviewing polygons, planes, points, lines and etc.
Science- Last week we did two really interesting investigations.  We conducted an experiment using mealworms and earthworms.  We learned about their similarities and differences.  We have also talked about the life cycle (ex: butterflies, mealworms, frogs, etc.)  We will continue to study heredity and talk about recessive and dominate genes
WRITING- We have been looking at the art and writings of Chris Van Allsburg.  Chris Van Allsburg 
has very interesting pictures.  The students have been looking at his pictures and writing their own
stories of what they think is going on in the picture.  This week we will continue to study 4 square  
writing method.
Language and Reading- We are going to begin a new book report project.  This week we will be discussing historical fiction books Mr. Marriot (the reading specialist) will be visiting our class for a book talk.  On Thursday Mrs. Clark (the librarian) will have books available for the students to check out that are historical fiction.  All the students will pick their book and check it out at this time.  I will give the student’s the book project that will go along with this book on Tuesday (no school on Monday).

Welcome Back


Math- Understanding integers, coordinate, planes and graphs.  We will soon be diving into fraction…. please make study multiplication with your student.   Before the Christmas break we took a test on division, mean, mode, range, & median.  I have graded them and returned them to your students to put in their homework folders and take home. 

Science- We will continue to conduct experiment exploring heredity. If you have any string of Christmas lights that no longer work will you please donate them to us for our upcoming electricity/energy unit.



WRITING-For the month of January we will be doing lots of writing.  The Utah State Writing Test is in February.  The student (or teachers) do not know what the writing topic will be on or what type of paper they are to write until the test is administered.  The test is given on a computer and your student will type their thoughts and ideas.  If you have access to a computer please have your child practice typing.
