Thank you for all of your support during Parent Teacher Conferences.  This Friday is the end of third quarter.  If you students has missing assignments they have until Thursday to turn them in to participate in “Workers Holiday”, if they have a 3 or 4 and good citizenship they can wear their pajama’s n Friday and we will be watching “The Tale of Desperaux” since we just read the book as a class read aloud.  If your student has missing work they will have to spend the 90 minutes trying to get caught up.  Final grades are on Friday and the student will have to take a zero for any missing or uncompleted work that is not turned in.

Science: We have learned how meteorologist predict weather, what tools are useful in predicting weather and how weather front are formed.  This week we are focusing on severe weather and why sever weather is formed. 

Math: Our class is studying fractions and decimals.  We are learning how to find which fraction or decimal is larger or smaller and how to convert from a fraction to a decimal and a decimal to a fraction.  We will also be adding and subtracting decimals.    

Reading and Vocabulary: Our class has begun a new read aloud book title “The Tale of Despereaqux” we will be watching the movie Friday.

For some reason this time of year always seems so busy.  At school we begin to prepare for testing, the students typically have lots of extra curricular activities, and etc.  I have notice many of the students have not been reading at home as much as many of them typically do.  Your students have a book report due March 7^th. This week, please read with you student and so they can finish this book and improve their reading skills.  Also, here comes THE BIG news, in the fourth grade, students are required to participate in the Science Fair or write a 300 word essay on a topic from the fourth grade science core curriculum.  See the attachment for Science Fair information

Science: We have begun our weathering unit. 

Math: Geometry test have been graded and returned to the students.  Our class is now beginning to learn about fractions and decimals  

Reading and Vocabulary: This week in reading groups will we be doing reading and writing different types of poetry.

This Friday at 9:00am Tyler Albrecht, a local children’s dentist, is coming to present to the students.  He has a wonderful presentation, that is not your typical dental presentation, and the kids really seem to like it.  He uses a power point presentation with videos and pictures of different animals and tell the kids all about animal teeth.  For example... Why carnivores have sharp teeth and herbivores have flat teeth.  He talks about shark teeth and how they can produce 2000 teeth in their lifetime.  He tells which animals have the largest teeth, the most teeth, no teeth, and which animals use their teeth to walk.  He also shows videos from different zoos and how they take care of seals teeth, Rhino's teeth, etc. At the end, after he has their attention, he talks about our teeth and the importance of them and compare them to animals teeth. HE DOES NO ADVERTISING and is a service he provides to the fourth graders in the community since it is apart of our core curriculum. 

Monday, January 30-Friday Feb. 3rd

Open enrollment forms are in the office for those parents who are interested.  The forms are due Friday, February 3, 2012.  Curriculum night is this Thursday from 6-7:00pm. Our classroom is an open house for this hour to come see what your students have been working on this year.  It is fun for the students to show their parents their portfolios and different projects they have made throughout the year. 

I will send home a class list Monday, February 6^th, for those students who choose to bring Valentines.  We will have a small Valentine Exchange Celebration Tuesday, February 14^th.  Students do not need to bring Valentines however, if they do choose to bring Valentines they need to have one for each student in the class (27 students).  We will also be making Valentine Mailboxes prior to Valentines Day.

Science: I graded and gave the students their Water Cycle Test.  We will now begin our unit on Weathering.

Math: We have been and will continue to study geometry! Geometry is a big part of the fourth grade curriculum.

Reading and Vocabulary: We have been doing ‘book buddies’ with a second grade class.  It has been a rewarding experience for both fourth graders and second graders alike.  This is our final week of book buddies.

Science: This is the last week we will be studying the water cycle and then we will move in to our next unit, Weathering.

Math: We have been and will continue to study geometry! Geometry is a big part of the fourth grade curriculum.  The homework I have sent home focuses on multiplication and division because the students seem to forget the steps when they are not doing them often. 

Reading and Vocabulary: We do not have reading groups this week because of DIBELS testing.  We will do reading, vocabulary and comprehension as a whole group in the classroom for the next two weeks.  Reading groups will resume next Monday.
