HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Thank you for the donations for the Christmas Carol.  The students had a great time.  I feel very fortunate to have your students in my class.  This group of students is so cute and fun. There have been many students who are missing a lot of school.  Math and reading begin to move really fast this time of year and when your student misses class they get very behind quickly.  Please try to have your students to school and on time. 

Homework- due Thursday
For homework this week please complete the following:
·      Division Math Paper
·      Read blue page
·      Practice spelling words

Upcoming events:

o   Tuesday, January 10th- Parent Kindergarten meeting 11:45am in the gym.
o   Monday, January 16th-MLK Day. No school.
o   Wednesday, January 25th- Flag Ceremony assembly. (OUR CLASS IS IN CHARGE OF THE ASSEMBLY AND THE STUDENTS WILL BE PERFORMING. YOU ARE INVITED TO COME TO THE ASSEMBLY AT 10:00 (K-2) OR AT 10:45 (3-5).

Science: We are starting the Water Cycle unit.  This is a fun unit which will lead us into the Weathering unit thereafter.     

Math: We have been learning long division.  Please help your students practice this concept. We will be learning about money and dividing money as well. 

Reading and Vocabulary: There will be a few days the students will not have reading groups due to DIBELS testing.  I will conduct reading practice and strategies as a whole class for these days. 

Spelling:  Please see each students individual spelling sort for this weeks spelling words or the back side of this newsletter.

For homework this week please complete the following:
·      Division Math Paper
·      Read blue page
·      Study the “Rock Unit Study Guide” for the test on Wednesday.
·      Spelling test Friday-study spelling words (no assigned homework).

Upcoming events:

o   Monday, December 5th- Orlando’s Birthday
o   Thursday, December 15th- We will be going to the Christmas Carol Play at SUU 10:00am
o   Thursday, December 15th- Afternoon Christmas School Sing
o   Monday, December 19th- Winter Recess Begins.
o   Monday, January 2nd- School Resumes

Science: Review rocks and fossils and test on Wednesday.   

Math: We have been learning long division.  Please help your students practice this concept. Also, there are many students’ who do not know their multiplication, please practice them over the Christmas break. 

Reading and Vocabulary:  Reading groups that stay within the classroom are starting literacy centers during the forty-five minute block.  Literacy centers will allow us to learn and review concepts more often in short intervals of time.

I hope you all had a terrific Thanksgiving and enjoyed the break!  I love the holiday season and look forward to getting to spend such a special time of year with your students.

Homework- due Thursday
For homework this week please complete the following:

Science: Our rock cycle has been a lot of fun so far.  Each student is learning how to identify sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. 

Math: We are starting to learn how to tell time.  This is a short unit to where we will continue to practice multiplication before moving on to long division.

Thanksgiving Break- November 23-25th
Next week is thanksgiving break! Since we only have school Monday and Tuesday there will not be a newsletter or homework! Enjoy the break and if traveling, travel safe.

Homework-
For homework this week please complete the following:

·      Multiplication practice sheet front and back.
·      Work on book report
·      Get grades signed by your guardian

Upcoming events:

o   October 18th – Damien’s Birthday
o   Wednesday, October 26th - Assembly 10:45am
o   Friday, October 28th- Fall Carnival 5:00pm
o   Monday, October 31- Halloween Sing 2:45pm
o   November 2nd- Book reports due.
o   November 3rd-Class Math Competition.
o   November 4th- Reflection entries due.

Science: We are learning the different types of rocks, how they are formed and how to classify them.

Math: This week we are beginning to learn multiplication with double digits by double digits ex: 38 x 42=.

Reading and Vocabulary:  Please refer to the blog or your students white packet for book report information.  The book report is due a week from Wednesday.  Also, reading groups here at school are working very smoothly and I appreciate the parent volunteers.  Please make sure you are reading with your students at home each night.  

Spelling:  Please see each students individual spelling sort for this weeks spelling words.    

The end of first quarter has officially ended!  Please see your student’s grade report for final grades (sent home Monday, October 25).  The grade report does need to be signed by a parent and returned to school by Thursday, October 27, 2011.

Book Report


Mrs. Smith’s Class
“Book in a Bag” Book Report
Due: Wednesday, November 2, 2011

You will need to sign the ‘book sign-up’ by Wednesday, October 12th.
You get to choose any kind of book you would like to read.  It needs to be a chapter book that suits your reading level well.  After you have read the book:

1.     Choose a favorite chapter you read.
2.   Find 5 things that represent characters, events or the setting of your book that can go inside your bag.  You can also draw the object, cut pictures out of magazines, print an example of the object you have found on your computer. 
3.   Place the actual book inside your bag.  If you had to return your book to the library or the owner, draw a picture of the cover or photocopy.

4. Wednesday Class Presentation:

1.     Present you “Book in a Bag” to us.
2.   Prepare to explain why you chose the objects in your bag and explain how they go with your story.
3.   Try to make it short, exciting and don’t tell us the ending so we will want to read it ourselves.  Leave us wanting to read more.  Advertise why we should read it and why you picked it.

RED RIBBON WEEK!
·      Monday: Sock it to drugs!  Wear crazy socks.
·      Tuesday: Turn your back on drugs. Wear clothes backwards.
·      Wednesday: Red Ribbon Day. Wear RED.
·      Thursday: Being drug free ROCKS! Dress like a rock star.
·      Friday: You’d have to be crazy to do drugs. Crazy hair day.

Math: We are continuing to work on multiplication, addition and subtraction however, are main area we are focusing on this week is graphing.  

Reading and Vocabulary:  There is a separate packet with all of the information for our upcoming book report.  The students can choose a chapter book of their liking to present as a “Book in a Bag!”  I will provide the students with a plastic bag in order to complete their assignment.  We have library on Wednesday so students who do to have a book can check one out on Wednesday.  You can also check the blog mrs-smith5.blogspot.com for the assignment.

Spelling:  For spelling homework the students will complete the spelling relay.  Each student should have a half sheet of paper with his or her spelling list. 

The students have P.E. on Tuesdays and Fridays.  If the students wear snow boots to school they may want to bring a pair of tennis shoes in order to be able to run better during this time.  (P.E. does take place in the gym when the weather is cold.)
